Paréidolie – Abstraction figurative / Pareidolia – Figurative Abstraction
Je suis un artiste visuel québécois dont la pratique explore le figuratif, le surréalisme et les images issues de l’inconscient. Depuis 2009, la paréidolie constitue ma principale recherche artistique et la démarche que j’ai le plus longuement développée.

I am a Quebec visual artist whose practice explores figurative art, surrealism, and imagery drawn from the subconscious. Since 2009, pareidolia has been my principal artistic study and the creative process I have explored most extensively.

Paréidolie (skip to English version further down)
La paréidolie est un phénomène psychologique qui nous amène à percevoir des formes reconnaissables dans des stimuli visuels désordonnés, ambigus ou aléatoires : des nuages, les veinures d’un carrelage, la surface grillée d’une tranche de pain, une tache sur un mur, par exemple.
On suppose que ce phénomène pourrait être lié à un ancien mécanisme de survie. Il aurait peut-être permis à nos ancêtres de repérer plus rapidement un prédateur dissimulé dans une forêt dense ou, au contraire, de distinguer une proie immobile ou camouflée que d’autres animaux n’auraient pas remarquée.
J’explore ce phénomène dans l’une de mes recherches graphiques depuis 2009. Il s’agit, à ce jour, de la démarche que j’ai le plus longuement développée.
Je commence par déposer sur le support quelques traits, points, formes, taches et autres gribouillis, parfois même à l’aveugle.
Puis, en tournant et en retournant le support, je laisse la paréidolie opérer. Peu à peu, mon subconscient commence à y percevoir des images qui continuent de m’étonner et de me surprendre : des visions que je n’aurais probablement jamais imaginées autrement.
Cette démarche, initialement abstraite, m’amène en quelque sorte à inverser le processus habituel de l’abstraction : plutôt que de simplifier ou de transformer le figuratif pour aller vers l’abstrait, je fais émerger le figuratif à partir de l’abstrait.
La structure abstraite initiale demeure néanmoins visible dans l’œuvre finale. Elle continue d’habiter l’image figurative qui en résulte et lui confère une tension, une ambiguïté et un langage visuel qui lui sont propres.
Pareidolia
Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon that leads us to perceive recognizable forms in disordered, ambiguous, or random visual stimuli: clouds, the veining of a tile, the toasted surface of a slice of bread, or a stain on a wall, for example.
It is believed that this phenomenon may be connected to an ancient survival mechanism. It may have helped our ancestors detect a predator concealed in a dense forest or, conversely, recognize a motionless or camouflaged prey animal that other creatures might not have noticed.
I have been exploring this phenomenon through one of my graphic studies since 2009. To date, it is the artistic process I have investigated most extensively.
I begin by placing a few lines, dots, shapes, stains, and other scribbles onto the surface, sometimes even while working blindly.
Then, by repeatedly turning and rotating the support, I allow pareidolia to take effect. Gradually, my subconscious begins to perceive images that continue to surprise and fascinate me—visions I would probably never have imagined otherwise.
This process, although initially abstract, leads me to reverse the usual movement of abstraction. Rather than simplifying or transforming figurative imagery into abstraction, I allow figurative forms to emerge from the abstract.
The original abstract structure nevertheless remains visible within the finished work. It continues to inhabit the resulting figurative image, giving it its own tension, ambiguity, and visual language.
